Wooden doors with glass panes are an elegant and classy look for any door in your house, which is why it's such a shame when the glass gets broken or scratched. Luckily it's not something you just have to live with, because it's actually possible to fix it yourself. All you need is a few common tools, a good eye and a steady hand, and you can
fix your broken door in no time. So how is it done? Let's take a look.
The first thing you'll need to do is to prepare the area that you're going to be working on. It's a good idea to use decorator's tape to tape over the edges of the surrounding panes, just so that you don't end up breaking more glass by trying to fix your door! Once you've done this, you'll need to remove any paint or sealant that is around the broken pane on your door, holding the glass in. You can do this pretty easily with a sharp knife. At this point, you should now be able to see the wooden parts that are holding the glass into the door panel. You'll need to remove these too to free the broken pane, and depending on how it's secured, you might need a claw hammer to remove nails or a chisel to prise out the wood. Once that's done, the glass should be free, and you should be able to easily lift it out of the door frame with your hands.
Now that you've removed the old glass pane from your door, the next job is to replace it with a new one. The most important thing to remember is to measure the space correctly because the glass should be between 3 and 5 millimetres smaller than the frame so that it fits correctly. Once it's slotted nicely into place, you're going to want to put the wooden frame back into place to hold the glass still, which you can do with some nails. Once the wood is back in place it's a good idea to seal it again as a bit of extra security. This will all make sure that your glass won't fall out, but for the finishing touches, you may want to fill the holes that the nails have left and give the door a lick of paint to hide the work you've done.
